HYDRANGEA AUBERGINE

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Pimpernel Classic’ (Aubergine form)

Hydrangea ‘Pimpernel Classic Aubergine’ is a rich, dramatic variety distinguished by its large mophead blossoms in deep aubergine tones—shades of purple-wine layered with hints of blue and green. The flowerheads are impressive in size and carried on long sturdy stems, making them excellent for premium cut arrangements. The lush dark foliage provides a beautiful contrast that enhances the deep floral hues.

HISTORY

Part of the “Classic” hydrangea series, ‘Pimpernel’ was developed to produce hydrangeas with strong florist-friendly traits: long stems, uniform large blooms, and richer color options. The aubergine form has gained popularity for its moody, luxurious aesthetic.

Climate: Best suited to temperate climates. As with many Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars, grown under controlled conditions (greenhouses) for cut flower markets, though it can also be grown outdoors where winters are mild

GROWING CONDITIONS

Moist, rich, well-drained soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil to maintain color vibrancy. Morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat helps preserve flower quality. Ensure good soil moisture without waterlogging; stems should be supported for cutting.

Symbol: Luxurious elegance, mystery, and deep emotion

USES

‘Pimpernel Classic Aubergine’ is prized in high-end bouquets, event designs, and luxury arrangements where color depth and statement blooms are required. Also excellent as a focal flower in centerpieces, table arrangements, and for designs that lean toward moody or dramatic palettes.
