HISTORY

First discovered in a hedgerow in England during the mid-1800s, Corylus contorta gained popularity as a collector’s plant and later as a striking ornamental shrub in Victorian gardens. It became widely known as “Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick” in the early 20th century, named after the Scottish entertainer who carried a twisted cane resembling its branches. Today, it is highly valued for its sculptural quality in gardens and floral art.
